A few items and information / feedback
Cafeteros Cycling Club and Team Mossman Tokeneke Racing are staging the Tokeneke Classic bicycle race around the Barkhamsted Reservoir in Central Connecticut on August 8th, 2010. The area was chosen because of the challenging terrain and spectacular beauty of the race course. This popular race is returning for its seventh edition after a very successful 2008.
We are very pleased to announce that the Tokeneke Classic has been chosen as the USAC New England Regional Championship Road Race.
The course is multiple loops of a challenging 22-mile circuit with about 2000 feet of climbing per lap. The course generally separates the field but if not the final climb, with 580 feet in 2.2 miles, ensures a thrilling finish.

Start Line will be in front of the East Hartland Volunteer Firehouse.
Finish Line - we have moved the finish line about 250m further down the road from the 2009 race. The finish will be on the flats about 250m past the crest of the Rt 20 finishing climb (i.e. past the intersection of Rt 20 and Balance Rock Road). We will have finishing flags, so no complaints about missing the finish. (The finish is about 1 mile north of the start. Spectators can walk from the start, or please park off the main road on either Brook Drive - south of the finish - or Old Town Road - north of the finish.)
Feed Zone is a few hundred meters before the crest of the finishing hill on Rt 20 / N Hollow Rd (and so about 400 or 500m before the finish line). NO FEEDING OUTSIDE THE FEED ZONE. Neutral water will be supplied (courtesy of Hammer Nutrition) but do not rely on neutral water only - it will be a hot day and with all the riders we may not get everyone. (Please park off the main road on Old Town Road north of the finish.)
Finishing Climb we've received many (well, one or two) questions. The Tokeneke finishing climb, unlike the Longsjo/Fitchburg or the former Unionvale or Housatonic finishes, is part of the loop and all fields except Cat. 4/5 will traverse it once or twice before the finish. The climb itself is a wonderful consistent pitch - about 2.2mi at a 5% grade. See the Race Profile for a comparision with other local races.
Course: The racers start in front of the E Hartland volunteer firehouse and then proceed south on 179, in a clockwise direction around the reservoir. At the junction of Routes 179 and 219 (about 4.3mi), the racers will bear right onto 219 South. The race will move in a clockwise direction so that at intersections the racers turn right, thus avoiding having to cross other lanes of traffic. At the intersection of 219 and 318 (about 6.9mi), the race will bear right onto 318 West and will go over the Saville Dam. Just past the dam at about 7.7mi, the race will turn right onto Beach Rock Road. This is the first climb and the pavement on Beach Rock Road is rough. At the corner of Beach Rock and 181 (about 8.6mi), the racers will turn right and travel north on Route 181. In West Hartland (about 15.9mi), the race will proceed east on Route 20, completing the lap by returning the racers to the corner of Routes 20 and 179 in East Hartland.
Route 219 South (the downhill from mile 4 to mile 7 just before crossing the dam), is new, smooth, and wonderful
BEACH ROCK ROAD (the right-hand turn at mile 7 ¾ just after the dam) IS STILL ROUGH, POT-HOLED, AND NASTY. The town of Barkhamsted will resurface but not until after the race. Sorry it's still bad but next year should be nice. At least it is uphill.
The resurfacing from last year (starting about mile 15, Route 20 north of W. Hartland and including the screaming downhill) is also great to ride on.
The CT Dept of Transport will resurface the finishing cpmb (mile 20), but again after our race
A bird's-eye tour of the course. Set http://www.tokenekeclassic.info / TokenekeClassicBicycleRace.kmz - as a network link in Google Earth (under "My Places"). Best to turn off lat/long grid ("View" unclick "Grid") and most importantly set Elevation Exageration to 3 (under "Tools - Options"). Then highlight the link/file in My Places and hit the play button at the bottom of My Places. Please note that, while we have made every effort, we cannot guarantee accuracy and we also reserve the right to modify the course.
On-line registration will be at at bikereg.com bikereg.com. (online service fee applied based on Bikereg.com standard service fee rates). $15 surcharge for day-of registration.
Parking is at Berg (or Burg) Field, on Rt 20 about 0.3 miles south-east of the Rt 20 / Rt 179 intersection. THERE IS NO RACER PARKING AT START AREA. To walk or ride from the Berg field parking area to the start area take the path through the woods or turn left onto Rt 20 west, go 0.3 miles and take left onto Rt 179. Follow signs for the start.
Lunch will be available for purchase at the registration / start area, provided by the E. Hartland Soccer Association.
We're very excited about all the enquiries from new racers. We really want to encourage you to join us. The most important point though - if you're a new racer then as a man you must enter the Cat 5 race, as a woman the Cat 4 (juniors can of course race in the juniors race).
